The modern architect has yet to come to grips with the multi-dimensional realities of the actual world. He has made himself at home with mechanical processes, with favor rapid commercial exploitation, and with anonymous repetitive bureaucratic forms, like the high-rise apartment or office building, which lend themselves with mathematical simplicity to financial manipulation. In »Wir sind nie modern gewesen« (1991) stellt Latour fest, dass die Modernen die Natur als eine äußere Realität verstanden, die unabhängig von ihrem Handeln Bestand habe. Veränderungen der natürlichen Welt, so glaubten die Modernen, ließen sich durch mechanistische Naturgesetze beschreiben, die sie nur zu entdecken brauchten. Der Mensch hingegen bringe Kultur hervor und organisiere sich durch Regeln in Gesellschaften, die vom Menschen gemacht und damit auch von ihm verändert werden können. In dieser modernen Auffassung waren der Kultur-Mensch und die Natur eindeutig voneinander getrennte Sphären.
